Example #007 - The psychology of design, Simplified
Hey — it’s Deepak
Had a very productive day after a long week.
Reading time - 2 mins
I know designers aren’t psychologists but here it is.
Design uses subconscious triggers (colors, shapes and layout) to influence users and guides their attention, emotions, actions and shape their experiences.
By understanding this you can create experiences that make users feel good, remember things, and take action.
It's the secret language that shapes how you interact with the world around you.
For colors see example #006 - The perfect shade for your brand
For shapes see example #005 - 1 design hack, unmeasurable upside potential
For my 3 favorite subconscious biases in design continue reading
1. Loss aversion
We hate losing what we have more than an equal gain feels good.
In other words, losing $1,000 will "hurt" more than the joy of gaining $1,000.
Duolingo’s example:
Your fear of losing the Duolingo streak you earned encourages you to maintain the practice streak and keep going.
2. Endowment effect
Users are likely to overvalue something they own as compared to things they don't own regardless of their market value.
Pinterest’s example:
You can let users personalize their experience in the website or an app.
Like an ability to customize their profile, dashboard, feed or preferences.
3. Priming
Subtle visual or verbal suggestions before showing the message influences how users respond to the message.
Example:
If you're aiming to sell an expensive but cozy sofa as an e-commerce brand.
Use a background image where your sofa is on the beach or have clouds in the bg, this can evoke feelings of relaxation & comfort.
Now, because of those feelings people are focusing on comfort and not the price which makes them more likely to buy an expensive but cozy sofa which in turn can increase your AOV (Average Order Value).
Appreciate you reading. It really means a lot.
