Example #013 - 3 essentials of an E-commerce brand

Hey — it’s Deepak

Reading time - 3 mins

If you’re running an ecommerce store try this

Note: I’m not an E-commerce business owner but I own a Shopify agency and my client’s are, so that’s how I know this.

The 3-Essentials

1. Concept & niche

Assuming you already have a product or service.

Creating a niche in a crowded market is crucial, especially in the beginning.

And this is how you can identify your niche & target audience.

(It’s a continuous process but these questions will help you achieve that)

  1. What do we do better than anyone else?

  2. Why do customers choose and stay with us?

  3. What is our biggest competitors niche?

  4. Target audience identification

    1. Who benefits the most from this solution?

    2. What is our blue ocean?

Before moving forward here’s something to know:
A red ocean is an existing market with many competitors, while a blue ocean is a market yet to be discovered with no competitors.

Your red ocean

  • Where do we compete head to head with our competitors?

Your blue ocean

  • What do we provide our customers that no one else can?
    (You’ll have to innovate here)

or you can identify

  • What are the type of users that no has tapped yet?

Like if you own a marketing agency and your industry’s main target audience are startup founders, you can create a niche and target mom’s who start their businesses at home and offer your services to them, that’s your blue ocean.

Another great example:

Chocolate industry is highly saturated with big brands capturing most of market share.

But Tony’s strategy is to raise awareness about the cocoa industry’s slavery problem in the West Africa and lead by example, and inspire change in others with a mission to create slave-free chocolates.

They aren’t a chocolate brand, they’re an impact brand which sells chocolates.

2. Your pricing strategy

  1. Subscription based

  2. Direct purchase

  3. or both

With subscription model you have an advantage of having a predictable monthly recurring revenue.

Athletic greens is a great example of a successful subscription based model.

It’s a Billion dollar health supplement brand, yes with a B! All thanks to their simple subscription based option.

3. Offer creation

Offer to me is as simple as this:
(Address the biggest problems directly and present your product as the solution, it is a simple strategy)

Like TrueClassic does:
Getting the perfect fit for a T-Shirt especially for people who are fat or skinny was a big problem in the industry and they have built a $500 million brand around it.

Examples are the best way to lead & learn, that’s why at Design Examples we always teach by showing examples.
